The Carludovica palmata specie, better known as Jipi Japa in Bolivia, is used by the local handicraftsmen to make hats and other items and they’ve been doing it for centuries according to the elders. The Jip Japa is a perennial weed, docile to be knit and they’ve known this technique for a longtime, and it has been passed from generation to generation. It’s the activity that brings more incomes to the family.
Women are the most involved in this activity even though that the men also participate in the collecting of the material. Originally this activity used to be held by men, but when the demand started to go down it became an activity made by women. According to the information we have, states that the Jip Japa already existed when the Jesuit missionaries arrived in November 4th , 1723

In the center of Buena Vista, in the Ichilo province in the department of Santa Cruz, there is a community of 45 families whose rustic houses and smiling children show how much they’ve suffered in the last few years, like most of the towns in Bolivia which have seen their children immigrate while they are still young, leaving everything behind looking for a better future.
This is the reason the Hacienda El Cafetal joined forces with the communities that usually cultivate rice, manioc, banana, corn and coffee and created a project with the support of the Ministerio de Producción y Microempresa, the Viceministerio de Turismo, the Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID), and Fondesif.
